The Journey That Transformed My Perspective

Leadership Hillsboro was so much more than a leadership program—it was a journey of discovery, purpose, and transformation. Each month, we were invited behind the scenes of the organizations, institutions, and people who quietly work every day to make Hillsboro an extraordinary place to live, work, and raise a family. We explored government, transportation, education, healthcare, public safety, business, arts, agriculture, emergency services, and community organizations. Every experience revealed not only how our city functions, but more importantly, why it functions the way it does.

For the first time, I truly understood how every organization, every profession, and every person contributes a unique piece to something much greater than themselves. We each bring different talents, experiences, and perspectives, yet our common purpose is the same: serving our community. That realization was one of the greatest gifts this program gave me.

One of my favorite experiences was our Community Service Day. Our cohort had the privilege of painting picnic tables and benches for a local ice cream shop that had recently reopened after suffering an unfortunate accident. At first glance, it seemed like a simple volunteer project. But as I painted, I realized we weren't just restoring furniture—we were helping restore hope, beauty, and a sense of belonging.

Today, whenever I drive down that street on my way to the library where I work, I slow down for just a moment to look at those benches. Hidden underneath one of them is my name—a small signature that reminds me I left a tiny piece of myself there. Every time I see them, I smile because I know that even the simplest act of service can change how people experience a place. Beauty inspires pride, pride builds community, and community changes lives.

Another unforgettable chapter of this journey was Public Safety Day. Growing up, my relationship with law enforcement was shaped by fear. In the neighborhood where I was raised, whenever someone shouted "¡Agua!" it wasn't because water was coming—it was a warning that the police were nearby, and everyone scattered. That was the reality I knew as a child.

Leadership Hillsboro gave me the opportunity to rewrite that story.

Instead of fear, I experienced understanding. Instead of assumptions, I gained perspective. I witnessed firsthand the extraordinary dedication of the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect our community. Riding alongside a Hillsboro police officer was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life. I saw compassion, professionalism, patience, and courage in action. It reminded me that true leadership begins by listening, learning, and being willing to see the world through someone else's eyes.

The program continued to challenge me in ways I never expected. One of those moments came when I stepped into a helicopter.

For someone who has spent much of her life carrying invisible scars and overcoming trauma, flying in a helicopter represented much more than an exciting experience—it represented confronting fear itself. Every instinct told me to stay on the ground, but I chose to climb aboard anyway.

And something remarkable happened.

The fear that had once defined me became freedom.

As the helicopter lifted into the sky, so did my confidence. Looking down at the city I now proudly call home, I realized that growth happens just beyond the boundaries of fear. That moment became a powerful reminder that the limitations we carry are often the ones we place on ourselves—and that with courage, we are capable of far more than we imagine.

Leadership Hillsboro transformed not only the way I see this community, but also the way I see myself.

It taught me that leadership is not about titles or authority. It is about curiosity, empathy, courage, and service. It is about understanding that every person has a story, every organization has a purpose, and every act of kindness—no matter how small—creates a ripple that can transform an entire community.

As a library leader, I have always believed in serving people through knowledge, connection, and opportunity. Leadership Hillsboro reminded me that my work extends beyond the walls of the library. Every partnership, every conversation, every volunteer project, every difficult decision, and every relationship is an opportunity to leave our community a little stronger than we found it.

This journey didn't simply teach me about Hillsboro.

It helped me discover where I belong within it.

And for that, I will be forever grateful.
